Considerations Before Gynecomastia Surgery

Hello from THE Plastic Surgery Clinic in Apgujeong, where we've been keeping our promises over 21years. Today, we're talking about gynecomastia surgery aka. man boobs and what you should know before considering it.

But first, what is.

Gynecomastia?

Some might be unfamiliar with the term 'Gynecomastia'. How about we explore gynecomastia surgery together?

Gynecomastia, also called feminine breast syndrome, has different causes. It often happens due to abnormal tissue growth from female hormones and extra fat gathering in the chest.

This tends to occur during the shift from teenage years to adulthood when bodies are growing. People often don't worry much about gaining weight during their teens, thinking things will even out naturally when they become adults.

In reality, as folks hit their twenties, many naturally get a balanced body through activities like exercise or changes in diet. But there's one are that might not catch up as smoothly - the chest.

Especially if hormonal issues have led to chest development, losing weight might not change the chest much. THis can make wearing clothes uncomfortable and affect confidence when you expect a slimmer look.

It's a really stressful situation. While a full chest is seen as attractive in women, for men, it often becomes an unnecessary concern and a source of self-consciousness. This can impact clothing choices and attract unwanted attention.

If you're over twenty, have lost weight through exercise, but still feel uneasy because your chest hasn't changed, it's a good idea to get a clear diagnosis to see if gynecomastia could be the issue.

Since treating gynecomastia becomes less effective over time, it's important to deal with it early throught examinations to find and fix the root cause.

Could I have gynecomastia?    Here's simple guide to check! :

1. Feel around the nipple:

If you feel a firm bump called "Montgomery turbercles,' it could be sign of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia often occurs during growth when female hormones are secreted, leading to the development of glandular tissue. When this tissue develops, you may feel a firm sensation around the nipple and areola when touching the chest. If you notice this firm sensation, it could be a sign of gynecomastia.

2. Check the chest shape

The natural shape of a man's chest is flat. However, if glandular tissue develops, the chest may take on a more rounded appearance. If you gain weight and experience an increase in fat, the chest can become fuller, resembling a woman's breasts.

3. Look at nipple size

The normal size for nipples is around 6mm, and for areolas, it's approximately 30mm. If your nipple and areola size exceeds these measurements and appears protruded, it might indicate gynecomastia.

4. Check for chest volume

Gynecomastia occurs in 4-69% of cases during adolescence. While it often improves within 1-3 years, around 8% of cases persist into adulthood. If you were overweight during childhood or adolescence, and now, despite achieving a normal weight through exercise or dietary changes, you still have excess fat in the chest, it could be a sign of gynecomastia.

5. Compare breast size

The chest is divided into two like a decalcomania. While complete symmetry between the left and right sides is rare, noticeable asymmetry could be a sign of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia symptoms may not appear identically on both sides.
